MANAMA: Israel has extended by one year, the travel ban on its former nuclear scientist, Mordechai Vanunu, who was released last year after facing 18 years of imprisonment for revealing details about his country's nuclear programme. The Israeli Interior Minister, Ophir Pines-Paz, was quoted as saying that Mr. Vanunu would not be issued Israeli passport for another year-a move that would prevent him from leaving the country. Mr. Vanunu has spent most of his 18 years in prison in solitary confinement. Israel still views Mr. Vanunu as a security risk and has forbidden him from approaching ports and airports, apart from banning him for talking to foreigners without permission. He has also been charged with defying the terms of his release by giving interviews to foreign media outlets. Mr. Vanunu, on his part, has insisted that he revealed Israel's nuclear secrets to save the region from a nuclear conflagration.
