KOCHI: Many people participated in a protest demonstration held on the Chitoor Road this evening, where work on widening the Mullassery Canal is going on. The protest was organised by Janapaksham, a social organisation. Activists held a `pooja' to speed up the widening work. They also put up a banner lamenting the delay in completing the work. The State convener of Janapaksham, Benny Joseph, said that 385 private buses and hundreds of KSRTC buses used the road every day, apart from other vehicles. "Now they have to proceed through bumper-to-bumper traffic in the MG Road and join the Chitoor Road at Ernakulam South. Yet, the Corporation of Kochi has not taken measures to speed up the work," he said. Traffic was banned through the Chitoor Road when culvert-widening work began over a month back. The increase in traffic in MG Road began to slow down traffic in other arterial roads of the city as well. A. K. Sabhapathy of Krishna Hospital which is located adjacent to the work site says that patients who visit the hospital are put to hardships because of the delay in completing the work. At least two and three-wheelers and cars must be allowed through the road, he said. The Mayor, C. M. Dinesh Mani, said that steps are being taken to complete the culvert work before the monsoons. The Kerala High Court had directed that steps be taken to complete the culvert-widening work on a war-footing.
