Maid arrested, child rescued

NEW DELHI: A 35-year-old woman has been arrested by the West Delhi police for allegedly kidnapping the two-and-a-half-year-old daughter of her employer from Hari Nagar in West Delhi on Tuesday. The child has been rescued.

The police said a call was received around 7-30 a.m. saying that a child, Likhita, daughter of M. Bhaskar, an employee of the Delhi Public School (Vasant Kunj), has been kidnapped from LIG Flats in Hari Nagar. The local police reached the spot and investigations were taken up.

Mr. Bhaskar and his wife told the police that their maid, Shripati, a native of Bihar, was the suspect. She had been employed about three months ago on reference of the previous maid. However, the employers had not got her verified by the police. Following investigations, the police managed to trace the son of the former maid. He took the police to a rickshaw puller who happened to know the places where the suspect used to work. Finally, the police managed to trace the rented accommodation of the suspect at Dabri in South-West Delhi from where she was arrested and the child recovered.

According to the police, Shripati denied her involvement initially. She also told the police that she took the child away at the request of her grandmother, S. Lakshmi Rao.

However, the grandmother denied having made any request and told the police that she tried to stop the maid from taking the girl away. Later, the police said, Shripati allegedly confessed to having kidnapped the child. The reason behind the incident is not yet clear though. The Additional DCP (West), Ravinder Yadav, said the accused was not coherent in her statements. He added that there seemed to be some communication problemas she was apparently not able to understand Hindi.
