Woman sets kids afire, attempts suicide

NEW DELHI: A 35-year-old woman allegedly set her one-year-old son and five-year-old daughter afire and then tried to commit suicide in a jhuggi at Shakarpur in East Delhi on Tuesday. The boy succumbed to his injuries, while the other two are struggling for their lives in Jaya Prakash Narain Hospital. The police are trying to identify the victims till late tonight.

The police received a call around 7 p.m. claiming that a woman and her two children had sustained burn injuries. The police arrived on the scene and rushed them to hospital, where the doctors declared the boy dead on arrival.

Hurt in scuffle

NEW DELHI: At least eight Tihar Jail inmates were injured in a scuffle in the moving jail van on Tughlaq Road in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The incident occurred in the afternoon when the inmates were being taken back to jail after their appearances in the courts. While the bus was in the Tughlaq Road area, the inmates started fighting with each other over a trivial matter.

Pickpocket held

NEW DELHI: An alleged pickpocket was arrested by the North-West Delhi police on Monday while fleeing after robbing a man of Rs. 31,000.

According to the police, 32-year-old, Sada, and his brother-in-law, Aslam, had boarded a Blueline bus, plying on route No. 144, from G.T. Karnal Road in Sultanpuri on Monday to go to GTB Hospital. Sada was carrying Rs. 31,000 in his front pocket which were to be paid for the treatment of his relative, Jinda, who was admitted in the hospital.

As soon as they boarded the bus, five persons surrounded Sada and one of them picked his pocket. They got down at an intersection near a DTC depot. However, Sada soon detected that his pocket had been picked and he and Aslam got down from the bus and began chasing them.

Constables Dharambir and Ramesh, who were patrolling on a motorcycle, noticed the commotion, chased the suspects and managed to nab one of them, later identified as Ranjeet. Apart from the looted money, a surgical blade was also recovered from him.

Deportee arrested

NEW DELHI: A man who had been deported from Australia to Delhi in March for allegedly travelling on invalid papers after which he fled from the custody of the Immigration officials has been arrested by the Indira Gandhi International Airport police. The accused claimed that a municipal councillor from Punjab was involved in the racket.

The accused, Saleem, and some other people were deported by the Australian authorities on March 17, following which he fled from the custody of the Immigration officials at the IGI Airport.

A couple of days ago, they arrested Saleem. During interrogation, he allegedly disclosed that he had paid Rs. 4.5 lakhs to an agent Mohammad Hafiz and his accomplice, Murad Ali. Saleem also claimed that his papers were prepared at the behest of a Jalandhar municipal councillor.

Fire in slum cluster

NEW DELHI: More than 30 jhuggies were gutted in a fire that broke out in a slum cluster at Mandawali in East Delhi on Tuesday. No one was injured in the incident.

According to a fire department spokesperson, the fire broke out in the slums around 5-15 p.m. At least 10 fire tenders were pressed into service and the fire was doused in about one hour.
