VIJAYAWADA: The more than 5,000 Zilla Parishad teachers in Krishna district are a deeply worried lot about one thing ahead of the coming summer vacation -- the prospect of delay in payment of March and April salaries by the Government. The administration has launched efforts to change the old system of paying salaries through a "common cheque centre" and making payments directly to individual bank accounts. For this, the teachers have been asked to open accounts in the State Bank of India.
Salary statements
Under the new system, the Mandal Education Officers (MEOs) and headmasters will have to send consolidated salary statements of all teachers to the District Education Officer (DEO) who will forward the same to the treasury. The treasury will credit the salary directly into their accounts. As the new process is expected to cause an abnormal delay, the Government has ordered the education and treasury departments to pay March's salary on April 1. For this, the DEO will have to sign teachers' salary statements and send them along with the service records to the State Audit Department. The district audit officer will scrutinize the statements and give a certificate, which will be sent to the district treasury officer.
Work stuck
The Krishna district president of the Andhra Pradesh Teacher Federation (APTF), Kaki Vasantha Babu, said that work seems to be stuck somewhere in the district administration. The general secretary of the APTF, V. Subba Rao, warns the Government of a protest programme if immediate steps are not ensured.
