MANAMA: A Bahraini lawmaker has entered her name in the record books by becoming the first woman in the Arab world to chair a session of Parliament. Alees Samaan, who is Christian, also became the first non-Muslim to act as Speaker. The event has made headlines in the Arab press. The pan-Arab daily, Al-Hayat covered the news on its front page. The English language Gulf Daily News from Bahrain said that Ms. Samaan had "made history" when she chaired the session of the consultative council. Ms. Samaan said the event symbolised the evolution of democracy in the Gulf state, as well as Bahrain's commitment to "fight all kinds of discrimination." Warm applause greeted Ms. Samaan as she walked up to the Speaker's chair.
