Indian Council for Agriculture Research has sanctioned Rs. 20 lakhs

TUTICORIN: : The Indian Council for Agriculture Research has sanctioned Rs. 20 lakhs towards a research project on tsunami impact, which the Fisheries College and Research Institute will execute along with the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) and the Central Institute of Brackish water Aquaculture (CIBA).

The two-year project will study the impact of tsunami on the livelihood of fishermen at select coastal hamlets of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andra Pradesh and evaluate the changes in the employment patterns.

It will also help authorities examine the social and market dynamics post-tsunami and quantify the process of rebuilding through case studies.

R. Santhanam, Dean, FCRI, said data on house types, living space, occupational pattern, literacy, education, income and expenditure, savings, investment, ergonomic problems and nutritional status would be collected. "The information would be helpful in providing a vital database for taking decisions on revival and development of the fisheries sector."

The project would adopt participatory rural appraisal techniques to identify the stakeholders affected by the December 26, 2004 tragedy.
