Report on Gulf of Mannar afforestation
Staff Reporter
TUTICORIN:
Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park (GMMNP) authorities on Monday submitted a proposal on afforestation along a 340-km coastline to the `post-tsunami afforestation committee' set up by the State Government.
Speaking to The Hindu , V. Naganathan, wildlife warden, GMMNP, said, "We have identified 650 hectares of land between Tuticorin and Thondi in Ramanathapuram district for afforestation with mangroves and casuarinas to create natural barriers against marine-based disasters such as tsunami."
Mangroves would be raised as `block plantations' at 19 locations over 550 hectares. The other area would be covered with casuarinas in six places and these could act as `shelter belt plantations.'
Mangroves would be planted in mud flats near estuaries and casuarinas in areas where the soil is loose. The entire scheme costing about Rs. 1 crore was expected to be executed within nine months.
The scheme was chalked out as part of the efforts to cover every inch of land along the Gulf of Mannar coast with plantations, which could protect the fishing hamlets from destructive winds and waves.
