Special Correspondent
CUDDALORE: The president of the Association of Train Students and Research Scholars, P. Sivakumar, and a member of the Zonal Railway Users' Consultative Committee, M. Nizamudeen, have, expressed concern over officials' apathy in improving the railway network in the district. In a representation to the General Manager of the Southern Railway, Mr. Sivakumar said gauge conversion was yet to take place on the Villupuram-Mayildadurai sector, one of the oldest in the State. He also appealed to the Railways to alter the timings of a passenger train service on this sector, as hundreds of students bound for Annamalai University at Chidambaram and other educational institutions en route were dependent on the service. The departure of the train was advanced, before 5 a.m., posing inconvenience to students. Mr. Nizamudeen stressed the need for introducing the Cuddalore-Pondicherry electric train service to ease the road traffic congestion. At present buses were being operated at the rate of one in every three minutes, and yet all buses were packed to capacity. He called for speedy gauge conversion of the Villupuram-Kumbakonam sector to serve the industries better. Mr. Nizamudeen appealed to the General Manager to extend the Cuddalore-Tiruchi service up to Palakkad, and run a train from Cuddalore to Chennai via Vriddhachalam and Villupuram.
