CHENNAI: The fisherwomen of Tiruvanmiyur Kuppam will get a new market within three months, thanks to funds from Germany. The funds are for rehabilitating victims of the December 26 tsunami. The fish market on Kuppam Beach Road in Tiruvanmiyur, will be constructed after pulling down a dilapidated structure. Fisherwomen here said that since the tsunami, people refused to buy fish from them and instead went to Saidapet for their daily requirement of fish. The construction of the new market will cost Rs. 15 lakhs. It will have a freezer unit, a toilet, lights and piped water supply, according to members of the non-government organisation, German Leprosy and Tuberculosis Association, India. The Law Minister, D. Jayakumar, who laid the foundation stone on Wednesday, said the new market was being built as part of a rehabilitation project by the NGO. He urged the women to maintain the market in the same condition that it was handed over to them. The new market was expected to benefit about 100 fisherwomen who will divide themselves into two groups. One group of women would sell fish and fish products in the morning and the other group in the evening. T. Jayaraj Devadas, director of the organisation, said the NGO had taken up 50 tsunami-affected families each in five districts of Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Tuticorin, Kanyakumari and Chennai. Each of these districts has received Rs. 50 lakhs for buying boats and nets and Rs. 75 lakhs for building houses. The District Collector, S. Chandramohan and the district revenue officer, U. Sahayam, participated. The Tiruvanimyur Kuppam Meenavar Panchayat Sabai leaders were also present.
