New intervention strategy in AIDS prevention

Staff Reporter

To make retailers overcome inhibitions about selling condoms

MADURAI: The Centre for Entrepreneurship Development launched a `Condom on Wheels' project, a new intervention strategy in social marketing of condoms, here on Wednesday.

The project came into being following a survey among the staff members of non-governmental organisations, which noted that retailers had a stigma for selling condoms. Moreover, it was found that retailers lacked social marketing approach and commitment towards a noble cause.

Hence, the CED had taken up the initiative, as condoms were seen as the only weapon in the prevention of Human Immuno Virus infection/Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome for the high-risk groups, said R. Jayaraman, Member-Secretary, CED.

After successfully implementing a novel NGO capacity building exercise on a `social marketing of condoms' with financial support from United States Agency for International Development and the AIDS Prevention and Control project, the CED had now launched this project to train retailers to overcome inhibitions about condoms and encourage them to stock and sell condoms, he said.

It will cover all small towns in Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, Theni, Madurai, Dindigul and Karur districts, Mr. Jayaraman said.

The vehicle would be stationed at all the places of public gathering to create the awareness, he added.

Simultaneously, a Kancheepuram-based NGO had been assigned to implement this project in northern districts of Tamil Nadu. It would cover small towns in Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Thiruvannamalai and Vellore districts.

The Collector, D. Raajendiran, launched the project, flagging off the vehicle in the presence of K. Aludiapillai, former Vice Chancellor, Madurai Kamaraj University, and president, CED Governing Board.
