PONDICHERRY: Chief Minister N Rangasamy announced in the Assembly on Thursday that families of fishermen would be issued 100 kilos rice (free of cost) and a cash assistance of Rs 500 in view of the ban imposed by the Centre on fishing in the Bay of Bengal. The ban, which came into existence last week, would be in force for 45 days. Already the fishermen families had suffered the impact of the tsunami and hence the government had raised the quantum of rice from 90 kilos (normally available during ban period) to 100 kilos and the cash assistance, which was Rs 300, previously had been raised to Rs 500. Indigent artistes would be paid an increased monthly assistance of Rs 750, up from the present Rs 500. The Kamarajar Housing scheme covering the thatched huts would be extended to cover structures having asbestos cement sheets, tarred sheets or country tiles for roofing.
