PONDICHERRY: Agriculture Minister A Namassivayam told the Assembly on Thursday that the government-owned Pondicherry Agro Services and Industries Corporation would produce herbal mineral water based on a formula created by a Bangalore-based institute. Winding up the debate on demands for grants to Agriculture and other departments in the Assembly he said that the Department of Agriculture would extend a back ended subsidy of Rs 2000 per acre to farmers undertaking cultivation of such crops like pulses, groundnut, sunflower, sorghum, maize and other crops consuming less water. The department would also provide a 75 percent subsidy for cultivation of vegetables like snake gourd, bitter gourd, and ribbed gourd, which were undertaken only in pandals and required considerable investment. Mini botanical gardens would be established in Pondicherry and Karaikal regions. Cold chambers would be available in each of the Uzhavar Sandhais to protect fruits and vegetables brought for sales by farmers from different parts of Pondicherry.
