PONDICHERRY: Local Administration Minister A Elumalai on Thursday announced that Rs 3.65 crores would be spent to improve amenities and infrastructural facilities for pilgrims visiting the famous temple of Lord Darbaraneyeswarar (which has a separate shrine for Lord Saturn) at Tirunallar near Karaikal. Replying to views expressed by members during the debate on demands for grants to various departments in the Assembly on Thursday, Elumalai said the infrastructural facilities include construction of a guest house at a cost of Rs 50 lakhs, a bus terminal of Rs 1 crore, desilting of `Nalan Kulam' and construction of a `mandapam' along the bank of the tank at a cost of Rs 50 lakhs, desilting of Agasthiar Kulam (Rs 30 lakhs) and construction of a marriage hall and toilets.
New equipment
Modern equipment would be acquired to collect the garbage and solid waste from the municipal limits of Pondicherry, Oulgaret and Karaikal at a cost of Rs 1.20 crores. Elumalai said that the municipal and commune panchayat authorities would introduce a new system to ensure that the cable operators paid the taxes to civic bodies without room for default or any lapse. Subscribers to the cable operators would hereafter pay the fees the operators levied only after obtaining through the cable operators the bills issued by the municipal or commune panchayat commissioners with their signatures. This system would also ensure that there was uniform levy of fees. The municipal authorities would impose fines if cable operators were found to be collecting fees in excess of that fixed by the municipal authorities. If cable operators showed a lesser number of subscribers than what they actually had, stern action would be taken and a fine ranging between Rs 5000 and Rs 10,000 would be levied. Sanitary workers who were now getting a risk allowance at Rs 20 a month would be paid Rs 200 a month.
