Ban on dance bars

The decision of the Maharashtra Government to ban dance bars appears to have been taken in haste. Not all the girls employed in these bars have taken to the profession by choice. Their circumstances and social conditions have forced many into it. The abrupt closure of these bars will not help mitigate the condition of women; it will only worsen it.

Shadaan Alam,
Aligarh, U.P.

If the Government is serious about its objective of keeping the girls from being exploited, it should provide alternative avenues of employment to them .

M. Nazeeruddin,
Kurnool, A.P.
