Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE: The Department of Public Works will submit a exclusive project for hill highway to the National Agriculture Bank for Rural Development (NABARD) under the Rural Infrastructure Development Funding (RIDF) scheme.

The RIDF, a scheme supported by NABARD for rural infrastructure development, has created a corpus at the national level for the purpose of rural development in various States. Various Departments are given funds based on the guarantee of the State Government.

Addressing a news conference here on Thursday, the PWD Minister M.K.Muneer said that a sum of Rs 10 crore had been set aside for the multi-crore hill highway project recently launched by the State Government. Around Rs. 300 crores was needed for the total project.

Two-lane highway

He said that the survey of the 960-km hill highway project had been completed till Palakkad. The two-lane hill highway connecting Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod would be implemented in two phases.

Steps were being taken to draw up a loop road to connect the hilly regions of Kozhikode district. It would be finalised after a meeting of the MLAs of Kozhikode district soon.

According to the project, the highway would start from Nandarapadavu in Kasaragod district to reach Cherupuzha in Kannur district. It would then be extended to Boys Town in Wayanad district.

The plan is to construct a loop road from Boys Town to Veliyamthode that will link to Kozhikode district. From Wayanad district, the highway will connect to Arunapuzha in Malappuram district and the Ponpara in Palakkad district.

Dr. Muneer said that he would also meet the Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transports and Highways T. R. Balu in New Delhi on May 4.
