DHARWAD: The State Government will earmark more funds for research and other initiatives that aim to extend the ambit of the universities. The Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, announced this here after inaugurating the Kanaka Bhavan constructed on the Karnatak University campus. Mr. Siddaramaiah said that studies relating to the contributions of the saint-poet Kanakadasa and social reformers, including Basaveshwara and B.R. Ambedkar, are important and have to be taken up on a larger scale. He assured that Karnatak University, which is the second oldest university in the State, will be given financial help. The Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, H.K. Patil, spoke about the outcome of the research conducted by Karidurgannavar of the university on "Ion Exchange Membrane," which has now been patented. Basavaraj Horatti, Minister for Science and Technology, said that universities should focus more on conducting research, disseminating knowledge and the ideology of great reformers. Y. Nagappa, Minister for Social Welfare, and S.R. Morey, Minister for Municipal Administration, who released the books Kanaka Mukhagalu and Halu Matada Huttu, spoke. Niranjananandapuri Swamiji, Kaginele Mahasamsthana, released a calendar with pictures of Kanakadasa. Mr. Siddaramaiah also unveiled the portrait of the saint-poet. Presiding over the function, the Minister for Higher Education, D. Manjunath, said that in view of the assurance given by Mr. Siddaramaiah, the Department of Higher Education will consider starting new courses. Viranna Mattikatti, MLC; Vinay Kulkarni and Hanumanthappa Alkod, MLAs; A.K. Singh, Registrar; Mangalgowri Agnihotri, Mayor of Hubli-Dharwad; and Shanthavva Gonal, president of the zilla panchayat, were present.
