RAMANATHAPURAM: : The district administration will soon send a proposal to the Government on allotment of 850 hectares for the implementation of the Sethusamudram project following a demand by the Tuticorin Port Trust, nodal agency to implement the project, the District Collector, K. Sellamuthu, said. Speaking to reporters, he said land was available to meet the TPT's requirement, but it was the Government which would have to take a decision. The TPT sought land at Dhanuskodi near Rameswaram for reclamation. It also sought land for permanent office buildings. He said the Government planned to construct houses for people living 200 meters away from the sea. It would spend Rs.1.5 lakhs for a house of 300-325 sqft. The condition was that the beneficiaries should vacate the houses they occupied now. A survey to find out the number of houses situated 200 metres away from the sea had been initiated. It would be completed in few days. Approximately, there were 9,400 such houses. Mr. Sellamuthu said there was enough space for constructing new houses for the fishermen. Officials had been asked to choose suitable areas along the coast.
