Not quitting politics, ready to fight rivals: Uma Bharti

Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL: The former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Uma Bharti, on Thursday said that she was not going to quit politics and was prepared to fight her rivals within the Bharatiya Janata Party. She was speaking at a `bhandara' (religious feast) at Amarkantak in the presence of her Guru Sri Vishweshwar Teerth of Udipi.

On Wednesday, Ms. Bharti had told mediapersons at Amarkantak, the source of the Narmada, that she would take a final decision whether or not to quit politics after seeking the blessings of her Guru. Finally after her Guru blessed her with a message from Bhagwad Gita telling her not to run away from the Kurukshetra (battlefield), Ms. Bharti announced that she would not hesitate to target even leaders from her own party as the legendry Arjun had done in the Mahabharata.

Ms. Bharti expressed disappointment over the manner in which she had been sidelined by the party. It was unfortunate that whenever she landed in Bhopal or Delhi aspersions were cast on her motives by those within the BJP, she said. She had earlier been asked to fight the Congress and its party president, Sonia Gandhi, but now she found herself a target of attack within her party. About 40 MLAs attended Ms. Bharti's `bhandara'. The State Minister for School Education, Dhal Singh Bisen, was the lone member of the State Cabinet present.

Ms. Bharti said she had to take life-saving drugs and steroids during the last phase of electioneering for the State Assembly elections and now it was her turn to protect the State Government. She particularly advised the State BJP Government to stick to the Panch-ja programme— the five js-standing for "jal, jungle, jameen, janwar and jan" (water, forest, land, cattle and people). This unique programme was her brainchild.
