Court notice to Mumbai blasts case acused

Legal Correspondent

Hearing after four weeks

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice to an accused in the `1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts case' on a special leave petition (SLP) from the producer of the film `Black Friday' challenging a judgment of the Bombay High Court staying the release of the film till the judgment in the case was delivered by trial court.

The High Court passed this order while allowing a petition filed by accused, Moostafa Moosa Taranai, challenging the release of the film contending that its release before the trial court delivered the judgment could prejudice the case as the film was based on the bomb blast incidents.

A Bench comprising the Chief Justice, R. C. Lahoti, and Justice G. P. Mathur issued notice and posted the matter for hearing after four weeks on the petition by the producer, Mid-day Multimedia Limited.

The producer said banning the film would amount to curbing freedom of expression guaranteed by the Constitution.
