Vigil for naxals intensified

TUMKUR: The police have intensified vigil against naxalites in Pavagada taluk in Tumkur district on the border with Andhra Pradesh following a report that a villager was recently shot dead by naxalites in Kondapura in that State. A 17-member gang of suspected naxalites shot dead Adinarayana at his house on Tuesday night for allegedly continuing an affair with a woman despite an "order" from naxalites asking him not to see her. — Staff Correspondent

Don't break up coalition, leaders told

BANGALORE: The Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha leader and MLA, Vatal Nagaraj, has appealed to the leaders of the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) against taking their differences to the point of breaking the coalition. Speaking to presspersons today, Mr. Nagaraj favoured the continuance of the Dharam Singh led Government, and said it should be allowed to grapple with the various problems of the State. He appealed to legislators to prevail upon their leaders to avoid midterm elections. — Staff Reporter

BJP Mahila Morcha constituted

BANGALORE: The Bharatiya Janata Party has constituted its State-level Mahila Morcha retaining Srilatha Poornachandra as the President. The other main office-bearers are: Kamalamma, Sheela Shetty, Vanitha Narayan, Indiradhar, Rajani Koppar, Sharada G. and Madhu M. Two struck by lightning

GULBARGA: The rain in Gulbarga district in the past few days continued to take its toll on Wednesay night when two people were struck by lightning in Afsalpur taluk. According to delayed reports reaching the police headquarters here on Thursday, Basavaraj Revanasiddappa (35) died at Mannur and Srishail Ankalgi (28) at Sheshagiriwadi. A storm on Wednesday destroyed private property worth Rs. 20 lakhs in Chitapur taluk. — Special Correspondent

Man gets jail term for wife's death

Bidar: The Fast-track court has sentenced a man to imprisonment for one year for torturing her and driving her to suicide. The Judge, P.G.M. Patil, found Maruti Ambanna guilty of having starved his wife, Ishwari, and subjecting her to physical and mental torture. He was asked to pay a fine of Rs. 500. Ishwari committed suicide by consuming poison. — Staff Correspondent

Funds for Aradhana scheme released

Bidar: The Government has released Rs. 16.92 lakhs under the Aradhana scheme in Bidar district for 2004-2005. The Deputy Commissioner, T.K. Anil Kumar, has released Rs. 2.82 lakhs to each to the Assembly segments of Bidar, Humnabad, Bhalki, Aurad, Basavakalyan and Hulsoor, a release said. — Staff Correspondent

CME programme on eye cancer

Bangalore: Narayana Nethralaya will organise a continuing medical education (CME) programme for ophthalmologists on Sunday to create awareness about eye cancer. The programme will be conducted under the guidance of the Karnataka Ophthalmological Society. — Staff Reporter

PU exams likely in July

BANGALORE: The Department of Pre-university Education proposes to conduct the second year pre-university supplementary examinations from July 4 to 16. It has prepared a timetable. Those who have any objection to the schedule may contact the department on or before April 30. A final timetable will be issued after considering objections, the Director of the department, D.N. Nayak, said in a press release. — Staff Reporter

APMC polls

BELLARY: As many as 2.17 lakh voters, including 746 traders, will vote in the elections to five Agricultural Produce Marketing Committees (APMCs) in Bellary district. S.N. Jayaram, Deputy Commissioner, who issued a notification to this effect, told presspersons here on Thursday that excepting Kottur, APMCs in Bellary, Sirguppa, Hospet, Hagari Bommanahalli, and Hadagali will go to polls.

Power theft

CHITRADURGA: The vigilance squad of Bangalore Electricity Supply Company, Chitradurga, has detected a case of large-scale power theft in Hiriyur. This came to light during a raid on oil mill at Gopalpura of Hiriyur on Wednesday. The energy meters were tampered with. The oil mill owner has been asked to pay a fine of Rs. 4.03 lakhs.

ICFAI book fair

HASSAN: The Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (ICFAI) will be holding a book exhibition in Samskritam Bhavan here on Friday. The institute has published over 300 books on management and allied areas with a focus on emerging and frontier themes. In view of these, the ICFAI National College Hassan, has organised the exhibition he added.

Strike continues

Raichur: Autorickshaw drivers, who are protesting against the pre-paid service from bus stand here, continued their dharna for second day on Thursday. They are demanding a fare increase. The dharna by the drivers in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office disrupted vehicular traffic.

The Deputy Commissioner, H.V. Parshvanath, said there is no change in autorickshaw fares.

Two arrested

RAICHUR: The Manvi police arrested Bassappa from Bagalwad and Hanumanthappa from Halapur in Manvi taluk and recovered Rs. 8,100 from them while they were allegedly gambling. They have been remanded in judicial custody. The Kavital police have registered a case.
