BANGALORE: The Janata Dal (S) President and former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, should come up with specific instances and proof before demanding action on his allegations of land grabbing and of farmers being cheated by the land mafia, the Cooperation Minister, R.V. Deshpande, said here on Thursday. He told presspersons that Mr. Deve Gowda's threat to complain to the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi, if the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, fails to act soon and order an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation does not augur well for the coalition government. Mr. Deshpande said the repeated declaration of the Janata Dal (S) leadership that its party will withdraw support is beginning to sound hollow. "First of all I ask Mr. Deve Gowda to find out how many of his legislators are ready to face the consequences of such a move. Are they ready to face another election," he asked. When he was reminded of Shamanur Shivashankarappa's "advice" to the Congress to "get out of the partnership and put an end to the constant bickering and daily threats and insults," Mr. Deshpande said he will not share his views on the issue with the media. "These are matters to be discussed by the party leadership within the party forum; I will express my opinion there," he said.
`Unfair allegations'
Mr. Deve Gowda's allegation that the land mafia was given a free run in and around Bangalore during the tenure of the former Chief Minister S.M. Krishna was unfair, Mr. Deshpande said. "The Krishna Government was one of the most transparent and it cannot be faulted on any ground," he added.
