Special Correspondent
HUBLI: The State Cabinet will meet on Friday to decide the course of action on the Arkavathy Layout issue following the High Court quashing the acquisition of land by the Bangalore Development Authority, the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, said on Thursday. He told presspersons that the Government is yet to study the implications of the judgment and is awaiting a copy. It has asked the Law Department to look into which aspect of the layout proceedings has been struck down, he said. It will explore the scope for appeal, he added. On the statement made by the President of the Janata Dal (S) and former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, that the State should file an appeal, Mr. Siddaramaiah said it is the opinion of Mr. Deve Gowda. He said the judgment cannot be construed as a setback for the Government. On the issue of the Government taking action on land grabbing in and around Bangalore, Mr. Siddaramaiah said no one has opposed action against those involved. About 5,000 acres of land around Bangalore has been occupied illegally and the encroachers should be evicted.
CET
Asked about the future of the common entrance test (CET), Mr. Siddaramaiah, who heads a Cabinet subcommittee, said the Government has decided that that the CET should be conducted as scheduled. Mr. Siddaramaiah expressed support to Janata Dal (S) legislators on the issue of the delay in nominating chairmen of boards and corporations. ``The 11-month delay should not have happened,'' he said. On the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh's statement that nominations will be made immediately after the list is received from the Janata Dal (S), Mr. Siddaramaiah said it is not true.
Tragic turn of events
Our Hubli Special Correspondent reports from Gadag: Mr. Siddaramaiah cancelled his engagements in Gadag on Thursday afternoon and returned to Hubli following the death of the President of the Gadag district unit of the Janata Dal (S) in a road accident. Naganagowda Hiremani Patil had received Mr. Siddaramaiah and the Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, H.K. Patil, near the K.H. Patil Krishi Vignana Kendra, Hulkoti, and was following the Deputy Chief Minister in a multi-utility vehicle as the convoy moved towards Gadag. The vehicle hit a kerbstone and overturned and Mr. Naganagowda Patil died on the spot.
