Commissioner of Railway Safety to conduct probe
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
The Railway Ministry on Thursday suspended the Electrical Signal Maintainer (ESM) and his helper for their alleged failure to maintain the signal system that prima facie led to the collision of the Sabarmati Express with a goods train near Vadodara.
According to information received at the Railway Ministry from the Chief Controller, Western Railway headquarters, the two lower level staff, Balwant Singh and Boodu Poona, have been placed under suspension. The cause of the mishap, as per reports from the site, was that "the point was found disconnected though the point was set for loop line. Signal was found `taken off' for main line."
Official sources said 15 persons were killed, including the driver and the assistant driver of Sabarmati Express, while 107 were injured.
Twenty persons received serious injuries.
Earlier, R. Velu, Minister of State for Railways, made a statement in Parliament that the Commissioner of Railway Safety, Western Circle, would investigate the accident and strict action would be taken against those found guilty.
Mr. Velu condoled the bereaved families and expressed his sympathies to the injured.
