TIRUPATI: Countdown for the abolition of the Tirupati Municipal Council in order to upgrade it to a corporation appears to have started. It also indicates that the battle lines are drawn for a showdown between the Congress Government and the TDP-led council, with the former serving a notice on the latter on Thursday, seeking to cancel a resolution passed by it at an emergency meeting in November 2004 opposing the abolition move in the middle of the council period.
Concrete development
Though talk on dissolution of the body was thick in the air for quite some time, this is the first concrete development in that direction. The notice, elaborating the criteria laid down for upgradation and how Tirupati more than fulfilled all the norms, has given 15 days to the civic body to respond to the notice. The Municipal Chairperson, K.Sankar Reddy, is not willing to take the development lightly. Talking to mediapersons he breathed fire at the Chief Minister for trying to hand over the reins of the civic body to his close follower, hinting that the move to abolish a duly elected body was in that direction. Meanwhile, he claims that the High Court had today issued a stay order over the G.O., which sought to cancel the civic body's resolution. The council is having an emergency meeting on Saturday to discuss the development.
