Forest officials to tackle monkey menace

Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI: Forest officials can now be seen with a stick to tame the wild monkeys, which cause havoc in the agricultural fields and residential colonies.

The department has decided to act tough in order to bring a semblance of order, especially in human habitations, where monkeys are increasingly being perceived as a public menace.

After municipalities have been ordered to evict monkeys from the town limits, it's now the turn of the Forest Department to target monkeys.

In order to keep the primates away from colonies and bring down their number as well in the long run, the department has decided to go in for large-scale sterilisation.

The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, S.K. Das, who was on his way to Hyderabad after a visit to Chittoor west forest, in an informal chat with reporters at the airport here on Thursday gave details about the project.

According to him, the Rs. 8.5-crore project would be implemented on a trial basis in Adilabad and West Godavari districts, for which the State Government had so far sanctioned Rs. 2 crores.

Special camps would be held in the fringe villages, where monkeys brought from urban areas would be sterilised and let into the forests.
