Milk samples found adulterated

KHARAR (PUNJAB): A large numbers of milk consumers in Punjab are drinking adulterated milk, if the results of milk samples tested in different parts of the State during the past one year are any indicator.

Under a special campaign launched against spurious milk being undertaken by the Department of Dairy Development, 1,506 of the total 3,162 samples of milk tested were found adulterated not only with water but also with several other dangerous substances like soda, starch, urea, sugar, salt, formalene and glucose.

Divulging the progress of the drive here today, the Punjab Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, Jagmohan Singh Kang, told reporters that of the total milk samples tested adulterated, 1,466 were found adulterated with water, 25 with soda, 4 each with starch and urea, 3 with glucose, 2 with salt and 1 each with sugar and formalene.

Giving district-wise figures, Kang disclosed that 151 of 276 milk samples were tested adulterated in Hoshiarpur, 51 of 243 in Bathinda, 117 of 276 in Sangrur, 71 of 114 in Moga, 241 of 339 in Ropar, 37 of 106 in Mansa, 30 of 105 in Muktsar, 17 of 103 in Nawanshahr, 90 of 154 in Gurdaspur, 238 of 302 in Patiala, 170 of 301 in Fatehgarh Sahib, 119 of 202 in Jalandhar, 23 of 137 in Ferozepur, 85 of 270 in Ludhiana, 48 of 102 in Kapurthala, 8 of 95 in Amritsar and 10 of 37 milk samples were found adulterated in Faridkot.

Expressing concern over the surfacing of spurious milk suppliers in Punjab, who were earlier active in other neighbouring states, Kang said the main aim of the ongoing campaign was to educate and make aware the consumers about quality of milk being purchased by them.

Some unscrupulous profiteers in the greed to earn big bucks have started distorting the goodness of milk, which is nature's best gift to the mankind, he added.

Calling upon the milk consumers to visit the milk testing laboratories set up at every district headquarter in Punjab for getting the quality of milk they use tested, he announced that the state government would soon use mass media to educate and aware the milk consumers against adulterated and spurious milk. -- PTI
