Call girl network spread across many countries

Between 1987 and 1995, Kanwaljit's business grew manifold and he started making money to the tune of Rs. 10 lakhs per month

NEW DELHI: An alleged high-profile pimp with a call girl network spread across several countries and strong political links was arrested by the Crime Branch at Noida in the early hours of Wednesday. The police also arrested his accomplice and two call girls from a Chanakyapuri five-star hotel on Tuesday.

A team under the supervision of the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kumar Gyanesh, received a tip-off that Kanwaljit Singh, one of the most notorious pimps in the country, was operating from the Capital.

On Tuesday, the police sent a decoy customer to strike a deal with his close accomplice, Arvinder Pal Singh. The decoy contacted Arvinder, who demanded Rs. 20,000 per girl and asked him to meet at Taj Palace Hotel to choose the girl.

Subsequently, police personnel in plainclothes were deployed in and around the hotel. Soon after the deal was struck and an advance of Rs. 5,000 paid, the police arrested Arvinder and the two call girls.

During interrogation, they allegedly disclosed that they worked for Kanwaljit and that he was at his mother's residence in Noida. Subsequently, the police raided the place around 4 a.m. and arrested him.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch), Tejinder Luthra, Kanwaljit was involved in 17 cases of immoral trafficking, rape and cheating.

Born in 1958 to an accounts officer with the Comptroller and Auditor General at Allahabad, Kanwaljit was a very bright student. He studied in Sainik School at Nainital, after which he did his graduation in English (Hons) from DAV College at Kanpur.

He then did a hotel management course from Food Craft Institute at Lucknow in 1981. Kanwaljit started his career as a branch manager of PAC advertising company at Kanpur and was successful in striking deals with various State government agencies.

In 1983-84, he shifted his base to the Capital and started supplying auto-electrical parts to the Delhi Fire Service. However, he suffered losses in the business. Meanwhile, he married a girl from Rajasthan against the wishes of his parents.

Kanwaljit disclosed that at the time he was desperate for financial aid, a girl helped him and subsequently lured him into the flesh trade.

As he was good at communication skills, he soon started building contacts with the rich and mighty, and allegedly supplied them girls.

In due course, the girl who had got him initiated into the call girl business lodged a rape case against him, after which he was arrested and jailed for almost two years.

The police said between 1987 and 1995, Kanwaljit's business grew manifold and he started making money to the tune of Rs. 10 lakhs per month.
