TUMKUR: The 98th birthday of Shivakumara Swamiji of Siddaganga Mutt and the celebrations in connection with the completion of 75 years of his initiation into the holy order will be organised at the mutt, near here, for two days from Sunday. The celebration committee members, B.S. Patil, former Chief Secretary; V. Somanna, MLA and former Minister; K.N. Rajanna and S. Shivanna, MLAs; and M.N. Channabasappa, Principal of the Siddaganga Institute of Technology, Tumkur; told presspersons here on Wednesday that more than five lakh devotees are expected to participate in the celebrations. The Union Home Minister, Shivraj V. Patil, will inaugurate the birthday celebrations on Sunday. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, will preside over it. L.K. Advani, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, will inaugurate the platinum jubilee celebrations on Monday. T.N. Chaturvedi, Governor, will be present. Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister, will preside over it. H.D. Deve Gowda, Hassan MP and former Prime Minister, will participate in the valedictory function on Monday. Temple inauguration Mr. Patil and Mr. Somanna said the two programmes are a precursor to the 100th birthday of the swamiji, and for the next 24 months a similar programme will be organised every month in a different district. At Veerapura, the birthplace of the swamiji in Magadi taluk of Bangalore Rural district, they said a temple has been built in memory of his parents, and it will be inaugurated on Saturday. They said the Government adopted the village at the behest of the late Chief Minister, J.H. Patel, and basic infrastructure has been provided. An industrial training institute will be opened at the village. Mr. Patil said the Government wanted the mutt to start a medical college when S.M. Krishna was the Chief Minister, but the swamiji did not show interest in it. He said the late Chief Minister, Veerendra Patil, also wanted the mutt to start a medical college. The swamiji, instead, preferred to start high schools in rural areas of the State. Dr. Channabasappa said that in 1917, the then pontiff of the mutt, Uddhana Shivayogi, threw open the free boarding home and Sanskrit school to students from all communities.
