Plan to study change in sea profile

Staff Correspondent

DEHRA DUN: The Survey of India will establish new Tide Gauge Observatories at Aerial Bay, Campbell Bay, Camorta and Chatham in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to calculate the "redefined" Mean Sea Level of the region.

Talking to The Hindu today, S K Singh, Deputy Director of the Geodetic and Research Branch, said the Tsunami had led to a total change in the sea profile and also completely destroyed one of the two existing Tide Gauge Observatories. The need for establishing more observatories was felt as a lot of changes had taken place on the land as well as sea there.

Data brought back by survey teams showed that the landmass of the region had shifted four to six metres in the South- West direction and had gone down to the order of one metre vertically due to the Tsunami waves, Mr Singh said. It may be mentioned that the Andaman and Nicobar islands had registered a shift of three to four metres in the North- East direction over the decade ending 2004.
