Thermal plant shut down

CUDDAPAH: The second unit of Rayalaseema Thermal Power Plant, having an installed generation capacity of 210 MW, was closed down on Wednesday midnight for a 45-day period for annual overhauling and maintenance, according to the Chief Engineer of RTPP, Rama Rao.

The shutdown comes in the wake of severe water shortage being faced by the plant. The first unit of 210 MW is, however, functioning as usual.

Tandon worships at Tirumala

TIRUMALA: The Election Commissioner, B. B. Tandon, on Thursday offered prayers in the temple of Lord Venkateswara, here, along with his family members.

Earlier on his arrival at the Padmavathi guesthouse, he was received by the Tirumala-based TTD Special Officer, A.V. Dharma Reddy and other officials.

Mr. Tandon, who will stay overnight at Tirumala, is also likely to participate in the predawn rituals of Lord on Friday.

Devotee dies while treking

TIRUMALA: A devotee, Viswa Prasad (52), on Thursday died while trekking the steps on the footpath leading to Tirumala. The dead, who is believed to be a native of Bangalore, suddenly developed serious congestion in the heart while trekking and collapsed at the `Gali gopuram'. The other devotees, who were on their way, immediately informed the TTD officials, who rushed an ambulance to the spot. However, he was declared brought dead by the TTD-run Aswini hospital authorities.

Farmer's gift to Governor

CUDDAPAH: An award-winning farmer, G. Venkatarama Raju of Kodur, gave a surprise gift -- two bunches of red bananas grown in his fields -- to the Governor, Sushil Kumar Shinde, at Kalakshetram here on Thursday.

Red bananas, grown mostly in south interior Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, are unheard of in this region and each fruit costs about Rs. 5, Mr. Raju explained to the Governor. The farmer raised a red banana plantation of 400 trees in a 50-cent stretch of land in Kodur. The fruits displayed at a stall put up by DRDA/Indira Kranthi Patham was a big draw attracting the attention of farmers and other onlookers.

Two Janashakti activists held

ELURU: The police on Thursday arrested two activists of the CPI (ML) Janashakti (K.R. Group) at Singanapalli in connection with the murder of a fair price shop dealer, Kolluru Gopalakrishna, at Lakshminarayan Dev Pet in Polavaram of West Godavari district.

According to the Jangareddygudem DSP, Chaganti Rama Rao, the police arrested the Janashakti activists -- Madiam Ananda Rao and Konda Ramu -- at Singanapalli, an agency village in Polavaram mandal. The DSP said they were also involved in the case of burning of an APSRTC bus reported in Buttayagudem area last month.

The police recovered a .48 six-chamber revolver and another .8mm revolver from the accused.

Plea to continue fast track courts

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Committee of the Indian Association of Lawyers (IAL) has urged the Centre to continue and regularise the fast track courts scheme by providing the necessary staff and buildings.

The committee, which met under the presidentship of C. Padmanabha Reddy, senior advocate of the High Court, felt that though they were some lacunae, the scheme enabled in settling lakhs of cases all over the country.

Union Minister open railway station building

NELLORE: The Union Minister of State for Railways, R. Velu, will inaugurate the new railway station building on the eastern side of Nellore on Saturday. He will also inaugurate the re-modelled railway station building on the western side and and also at Venkatachalam and Vedayapalem. __ Staff Reporter,

Works grounded

KURNOOL: The Dhone MLA, Kotla Sujathamma, grounded the works of Handri-Neeva project in Dhone constituency at Cherukulapadu and Lakkasagaram on Thursday. She told public that water would flow in the canal by 2007 and that Handri-Neeva would be the lifeline of the most backward region in Kurnool and Anantapur districts. She asked the engineers and contractors to speed up the works.

Assume office

KURNOOL: K. Rambhupal Reddy and U. Akkireddy assumed office as chairman and vice-chairman of Kurnool Agriculture Market Yard here on Thursday. Eleven members of the committee also took the oath.

Earlier, Mr. Bhupal Reddy visited the Kisan ghat and paid tributes to Kotla Vijayabhaskar Reddy and garlanded the statue of Damodaram Sanjivaiah. A huge rally of bullock-carts was taken out to the market yard before the members assumed office.__Staff Reporter

Book released

TIRUPATI: "The hand maid of college administration", a book co-authored by Agarala Eswara Reddi, former Speaker of the Assembly and M.Abel, former vice-chancellor of SK University, was released at a function organised by Madabhushi Anantasayanam Institute of Public Affairs (MAIPA) here on Wednesday.

The Vice-Chancellors of SV University and SP Mahila University, S.Jayarama Reddy and Veena Noble Dass, spoke on the various facets of college administration. - Staff Reporter

High Court directive to SVU aothorities

HYDERABAD: The action of authorities of Sri Venkateswara University in not issuing hall tickets to students in the name of dues payable by them was not appreciated by the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

Justice G. Rohini directed the authorities to permit post-graduate students to write examinations. Many students had filed the writ petitions in the High Court complaining that in the name of mess bills not having been cleared by them, they were being denied permission to write the examinations and hall tickets are being withheld.

Joint Sub-Registrar

In ACB net

HYDERBAD : The ACB officials seized Rs. 47,791 stated to be unaccounted from the office of the Joint Sub-Registrar in Nellore town during a surprise check on Wednesday.

Three persons -- K. Venkateswarlu, G. Ratnam and Mohammadali Ahmad -- were seen moving in the office along with the Joint Sub-Registrar Vaiduryam and six other staff members, a press release said._
