`Row over DGP will be looked into'

Staff Reporter

KURNOOL: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, on Thursday said the controversy surrounding the Director-General of Police (DGP) would be looked into while brushing it aside as a minor issue. Talking to reporters here, Dr. Reddy who made a transit halt for refuelling on his way back to Hyderabad from Anantapur district, said it was not uncommon to have disputes among eight crore people of the State.

When reporters drew his attention to the protest lodged by Karnataka over Andhra Pradesh projects, Dr. Reddy tried to be brief on irrigation projects saying less debate on the subject was better for the State. He said the Chief Minister of Karnataka was acting on political compulsion as was the situation in our State too. Dr. Reddy said he planned a meeting with his Karnataka counterpart during his stay at Bangalore but did not materialise.

Rehabilitation

On the Totapalli project rehabilitation, Dr. Reddy said it was not fair to bring the issue to the fore much before the project was constructed and water impounded. The Congress was always very considerate in rehabilitating displaced people. The Srisailam oustees who had been neglected by the TDP government for long were rehabilitated during the term of Kotla Vijayabhaskar Reddy, he said adding that the same concern would be demonstrated now.

Dr. Reddy said irrigation projects had to be executed systematically listing priorities. The Chief Minister expressed discomfort over creating a controversy on his son-in-law involving himself in religious preaching saying it was a purely private affair and nothing was illegal about it.

Later, the Chief Minister made a surprise visit to the General Hospital and inspected wards. He inquired with patients whether the treatment was to their satisfaction. He wanted to know whether money was demanded by the staff to give admission and treatment.

Earlier, he was received by the Minister, M. Mareppa, and the MLAs, Kotla Sujathamma, M. Sikhamani, M.A. Gafoor and Katasani Rambhupal Reddy.
