HYDERABAD T: he much-publicised super critical technology finalised for the 660-MW expansion project of the Vijayawada Thermal Power Station (VTPS) in a single unit is being abandoned. Having found this technology expensive, the Andhra Pradesh Generation Corporation (AP Genco) is planning to implement the project with sub-critical technology instead. The project cost under super critical technology which operates on higher heat rate works out to Rs 4,100 crores ( Rs 6.2 crores per MW) whereas it will be Rs 2,600 crores (Rs 4.2 crores per MW ) if sub-critical technology is used.
Decision soon
However, the capacity will come down to 600 MW though consumers will get power at a cheaper rate. A formal decision on the switchover is likely to be taken shortly. The AP Genco is compelled to opt out of the super critical technology as Siemens, which offered the lowest price bid (Rs 4,100 crores) to execute the project, is unwilling to reduce the price while BHEL lacks this technology, according to G. Vijaya Kumar, Genco director (Thermal). He told The Hindu here today that the Genco would split the project into packages and offer it to indigenous firms. The BHEL possessed the technology to execute a project with 600 MW under a single unit.
One RTPS unit closed
Meanwhile, AP Genco has closed down one of the two units of the Rayalaseema Thermal Power Station (RTPS) at Muddanur for lack of water. It is a loss of 210 MW to the grid. Mr Vijaya Kumar said efforts were on to revive the plant by sinking borewells at the confluence point of the Penna-Chitravathi rivers.
