Earth Day celebration

NEW DELHI : To celebrate Earth Day, the public affairs section of the United States Embassy will screen a documentary film titled "The Environmental Cost of Growth" at the American Centre auditorium here on Friday.

The one-hour film will be followed by a short discussion that will be initiated by the Deputy Director of the Office of Environment, Energy and Enterprise U.S. Agency for International Development, John Smith-Sreen.

The documentary presents a compelling history of the environmental movement, beginning with the Minimata poisoning in Japan, DDT in the U.S. to incidents in England, Switzerland, Bhopal, Chernobyl and Love Canal.

Textbook on environment

NEW DELHI : The Goyal Brothers Prakashan, one of the country's leading educational publishers, has brought out a series titled "A Textbook of Environmental Education" for Classes VI to IX to create awareness among school students about grave issues like pollution, global warming, hole in the ozone layer and deforestation.

According to the publishers, the series is based on the syllabus prescribed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training and the Central Board of Secondary Education and has been prepared by a team of authors who have considerable expertise in the field of environmental education.

Community hall

NEW DELHI : The Outer Delhi Member of Parliament, Sajjan Kumar, dedicated a newly constructed community hall to the residents of West Delhi on Thursday for organising social and cultural functions.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kumar said the Congress was committed to provide better civic facilities and a transparent and efficient local administration to the people.

The community hall, constructed in K-Block of Sandesh Vihar at a cost of Rs.1.5 crores by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, comprises five changing rooms, kitchen, separate toilets and baths for ladies and gents and has the capacity to accommodate 200 cars in its parking facility.

Birth anniversary

NEW DELHI : The Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Panabaka Lakshmi, said on Wednesday that Dr.B.R. Ambedkar had a unique place in the world for his relentless struggle for human rights and remembering him was nothing but reaffirmation of our faith in the ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity. She was speaking on the occasion of the birth anniversary celebrations of Dr. B.R.Ambedkar organised by the Centre for Dalit and Minorities Studies at the Jamia Millia Islamia.

The Minister said the practice of values of equality, self- respect, communal harmony, tolerance and human dignity preached by Dr. Ambedkar provides solutions for many problems that the county was facing today.
