NEW DELHI: : The cricket season over, Virender Sehwag spared time to launch Shikhar, an organisation for social development. "I think the fortunate ones who achieve some success in life should extend a helping hand to those who may be struggling even to meet the basic needs," said Sehwag at a brief function held here on Wednesday. Shikhar is a voluntary organisation run by a group of professionals who are committed to the cause of helping the deprived sections of society. Among the major programmes undertaken by Shikhar is the project "Girl Child" with focuses on providing opportunities to help them compete with the rest. According to N. U. Khan of Jamia Millia University, the organisation will try to "develop skills among women to make them self-dependant and to provide them with career and vocational guidance". The other programmes planned by Shikhar include a vocational training centre, health awareness projects and environmental awareness. Maj. Khan said Shikar had been aiming at "realising the immense talent hidden within young men and women and channelising it. Sehwag was quick to offer his help when he learnt about this project through some of his former college mates and offered to take up the cause of the girl child. By associating with this project, Sehwag has shown his commitment to the challenges faced by society in various fields. His gesture will be a big inspiration." "Every person strives to achieve something in life. For most it becomes a struggle while some manage to achieve what they would have set out for. I am also making an effort to serve the needy and I wish more and more people take up such causes," said Sehwag.
