Goel re-elected chairman of MCD panel

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: : Mukesh Goel of the Congress was re-elected as Chairman of the powerful Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday.

The Adarsh Nagar Councillor defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party's Vijender Gupta in a one-sided contest where the former secured 16 votes against Mr. Gupta's two.

It was for the third consecutive year that the Adarsh Nagar Councillor has retained his position as Chairman of the civic body's powerful decision-making panel. Jaikishan Sharma, also of the Congress, became the new Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee.

He replaced Ashok Jain, the tainted Councillor who was expelled from the Congress after he was caught red-handed by the Central Bureau of Investigation taking bribe.

After his re-election, Mr. Goel said his priority would be to fulfil people's aspirations by implementing the party's manifesto. Stating that the MCD would give its schoolchildren free shoes and socks, the Standing Committee head said sprucing up the city for the Commonwealth Games 2010 and making the civic body corruption-free would be on top of his agenda.
