TORANAGAL: Industrialists in and around Bellary district, including Jindal Vijayanagar Steel Ltd. (JVSL), which has set up a mega integrated steel plant, have been planning to draw water from the Alamatti Dam. Industrialists had a preliminary round of discussion with the Principal Secretary to the Government, Department of Industries and Commerce, in this regard a couple of days ago, according to B.N. Singh, Joint Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of JVSL. Dr. Singh told presspersons that the JVSL came up with the proposal to find a permanent source to meet its water requirement in the wake of its plans to generate 10 million tonnes of steel by 2010. Many steel plants are coming up in the district and water has to be supplied to them. "Our water requirement will go up following plans to produce around 10 million tonnes (of steel) by 2010. Around 100 cusecs of water needs to be drawn from Alamatti to cater for all the industries. The response of the Government to the proposal has been encouraging," he said. The JVSL has been allocated water from the Tungabhadra Reservoir. The plant is permitted to draw around 24 million gallons a day. Meanwhile, the JVSL proposed to draw water from Alamatti by laying pipelines to find a permanent solution to its requirements.
