HASSAN: A health fund will be created and a committee headed by the Deputy Commissioner will sanction assistance to the poor, the district in-charge and Public Works Minister, H.D. Revanna, said on Thursday. Mr. Revanna, here to chair a review meeting, said there will be no political interference in the disbursement of funds. Seriousness of the ailment and the financial position of the patient will be the criteria for selecting the beneficiaries. The case will be recommended for the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. A health camp for women will be conducted soon, he said. The District Health Officer said that of the 15 doctors appointed on contract in the district, only nine have reported for duty. Mr. Revanna gave instructions that stern action should be taken against the doctors who refuse to stay in the headquarters. He asked the official concerned to appoint doctors against the 10 remaining vacancies. A.T. Ramaswamy and H.S. Prakash, MLAs from Arkalgud and Hassan respectively, said the authorities have failed to solve the drinking water problem. To this, the Minister sought an explanation from the Executive Engineers of Hassan and Channarayapatna divisions and asked them to file utilisation certificates for the money spent and foodgrains lifted under the food-for-work programme. He took the officials of the Department of Women and Child Welfare to task for having demanded money to transfer an anganwadi worker.
Rice at Rs. 3.50 a kg.
When the Assistant Director of Food and Civil Supplies said rice is not being sold at a higher price in any fair price shop, the Hassan MLA, H.S. Prakash offered to resign if the official proves it. Mr. Prakash and other MLAs alleged that rice is being sold at Rs. 3.50 a kg, instead of Rs. 3. Highlighting the irregularities in the public distribution system, they sought action against the officials responsible for it. Mr. Revanna asked the Assistant Director to file civil and criminal cases against those misusing the funds under public distribution system and directed him to complete the survey to identify beneficiaries for yellow cards by the month-end. The Minister expressed dissatisfaction over the functioning of the Department of Mines and Geology and the Regional Transport Authority. He expressed unhappiness over the reckless mining and sale of sand in the Hemavathi belt in Hassan and Holenarsipur. He asked the officials concerned to take stringent action against law-breakers. He directed the authorities in the Public Works Department to set up check-posts and unload sand being transported illegally. He asked the Regional Transport Officer to book vehicles that were overloaded. Mr. Revanna, who expressing his displeasure over industrialists not occupying the sheds allotted to them in the Industrial Development Area, asked the Deputy Director of Industries to cancel the licences of those who failed to occupy the sheds even after five years.
