DAVANGERE: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has sought the support of the Janata Dal (Secular) to form the Government in the State. B.S. Yediyurappa, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly and senior BJP leader, on Thursday appealed to the Janata Dal (S) president and former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, to give external support to the BJP to form the Government (Mr. Deve Gowda rejected the BJP's plea at a press conference at Channagiri). Mr. Yediyurappa told presspersons that if the Janata Dal (S) gives "conditional support" to the BJP for six months, the latter will expose those behind all the land scams in Bangalore. If Mr. Deve Gowda is interested in unearthing land scams in Bangalore, he should support the BJP, which is the largest party having 79 MLAs in the State. "What is the use in mutual denigration", he asked and said that Mr. Deve Gowda had accused the Congress leaders of involvement in land scams while the Congress had alleged that the Janata Dal (Secular) are involved in it. Mr. Yediyurappa said that for the Congress the welfare of Kannadigas is not important. That party's leaders in the State are only interested in carrying out the instructions of their president, Sonia Gandhi, irrespective of whether it harmed the interests of Kannadigas.
`BJP better in Opposition'
Meanwhile, Mr. Deve Gowda rejected the plea of the BJP. He said the party can serve the people better by sitting in the Opposition. He told presspersons at Channagiri that the Opposition is the watchdog in a democratic setup and the BJP should have brought this land scam to the fore. "We have played the role of the Opposition though we are partners in the coalition Government," he said. Mr. Deve Gowda gave credit to M.P. Prakash, Revenue Minister, for unearthing the scam with the help of J.C. Madhuswamy of the Janata Dal (United), and Sriram reddy (Communist Party of India).
