COIMBATORE: From rural markets and unorganised selling, self-help groups (SHGs) are venturing into new markets, newer products and improving existing ones. Assisting the 1.8-lakh members is the Kovai District Supply and Marketing Society. The team's four business development executives work like a self-financing unit, generating administrative funds by buying vegetables in bulk and selling them to five college canteens. Says S. Joel, the society's manager: "Earlier SHG members did not know how to sell and at what price. Now everything has been streamlined." The team identified buyers for SHG products and specified quality and packaging specifications for selling to departmental stores such as Nilgiris and Kannan.
Exhibitions
SHG members also showcased their products at exhibitions in Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Mysore and Hyderabad. "Some have even come back with the highest sales performance awards," says P. Jeyabalakrishnan, project officer of the District Rural Development Agency, which oversees the project. While earlier sales were limited to rural markets, such exhibitions have enabled entry into urban markets. Some members have exported Kovai cotton sarees to Sri Lanka. "We are trying to find new markets in Malaysia and Singapore. "The website (www.kovaidsms) has also generated inquiries," adds Mr. Joel. "We will conduct buyer-supplier meets for bulk products such as textiles, pain balm, coir mats and paper cups," says Mr. Jeyabalakrishnan. Currently the team is gearing up for the State-level exhibition, which begins on Saturday at Central Jail grounds, here. "A space of 9,000 sq ft has been booked for the SHG stalls by the DRDA," he says.
