CHENNAI: The lean manufacturing process adopted by manufacturers such as Toyota could be applied in the service sector to build a "robust and effective process," the Tata Consultancy Services CEO and Managing Director, S. Ramadorai, said Addressing students at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, on the occasion of the Institute Day here, he said that both sectors faced challenges, including pressure to increase productivity and reduce cost of operations. Both sectors were labour intensive and there was a need to optimise capacity and respond to changing markets. Toyota's success lay in the fact that it managed to roll out a new model every 18 months when the competition took double that time, he said.
Awards presented
He distributed academic awards to 49 students who excelled in their field of activity. The IIT-M Director, M.S. Ananth, stressed the importance of the spirit of sportsman. The Dean (Students), V.G. Idichandy, said that there had been some interest in neighbouring countries to participate in the Sastra competitions. The Registrar, Usha Titus, said that IIT had travelled a long way since its humble beginnings in 1959.
