The mother, Pushpalatha (40), who was dejected over the suicide of her husband, Vijayakumar, a railway employee, owing to debts four months ago, administered cool drinks mixed with pesticide to her younger son, Koushik, and consumed it herself. Her elder son, Gowtham (13), who refused to consume the cool drinks, ran outside the home and raised an alarm. However, before the neighbours could rush Pushpalatha and Koushik to hospital, the latter died. The condition of Pushpalatha was stated to be serious.
Held with fake passport
Officials said the accused was found carrying a passport in the name of Abdullah (37) with residential address given as Alwarthope in Thennur in the city. Upon an enquiry, he revealed that he had left for Riyadh with a genuine passport in 1988, and that he had taken a fake passport for going to Riyadh again, after his visa was cancelled in 1993 for having stayed in India for 120 days. His employer had dismissed him, stating that he was not supposed to return within 100 days. After obtaining the fake passport in 1994 with the connivance of his relative, Zahir, Mohamed Iqbal had visited Riyadh five times through Chennai and Mumbai airports. On January 12, 2005, he landed in India..
