Malidivian national held

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city police have detained a 33-year-old Maldivian national suspected to be involved in anti-Maldivian Government activities. The detained person was identified as Ibrahim Asif, 30. The police, State Special Branch and Central Intelligence Bureau officials are questioning him.

Asif is suspected to be a member of the Jamat Islah-ul-Muslimeen. According to security agencies, the organisation is an "extremist group poised against the Maldivian Government and one which stood for Taliban kind of Islamisation of Maldivian society."

The police were also probing whether Asif had been in touch with the fundamentalist elements in the city, including cells operated by the Wahabi group, which is accused of carrying out anti-Government activities in Maldives. Asif's passport indicates that he had been to Karachi and Peshawar in Pakistan. He had also lived in Sri Lanka for sometime. An official said Asif was high on the wanted list of the National Security Service of the Maldivian Government.

An official said that the Wahabi and Jamat Islah-ul-Muslimeen cells often acted in tandem and were sponsored by extremist groups in Saudi Arabia as well as intelligence agencies of certain neighbouring countries hostile to India.

The security agencies have information that a section of Maldivian youth going for purposes of religious education to Saudi Arabia and Pakistan were recruited by these fundamentalist groups for anti-Maldivian and anti-Indian activities. Many of these youth have relatives and friends who are in Thiruvananthapuram for educational and medical purposes.
