Former Minister accuses Government of collusion with contractors

Staff Reporter

Seeks status of advances to contractors

VIJAYAWADA: The former Finance Minister and TDP deputy floor leader in the Assembly, Yanamala Ramakrishnudu, on Thursday wondered as to why the Government had failed to bring to the High Court's notice that contractors had not begun works, despite having received mobilisation advances towards various irrigation projects.

He accused the Government of colluding with contractors and providing "false information" to the court when the case of mobilisation advances came up in the past.

Addressing a press conference along with the TDP Vijayawada urban president, Gadde Rammohan, and others, Mr. Ramakrishnudu said that the TDP had definite information that the nine contractors had not begun any work though a few months had passed since they received Rs. 1,500 crores of mobilisation advance.

"The Government knows that the contractors are not commencing the works. But it is hiding this fact for obvious reasons," he added. Mr. Ramakrishnudu wondered as to what had happened to the huge amount of money from public exchequer, which had been lying with the contractors.

He said that it was time for taking a close look at huge amounts of interest that the private contractors might be enjoying by depositing the advance mobilisation of funds in banks or circulating it in some other means.

While lots of money was stuck with private persons in this manner, it was a pity that the Government and the officials were saying that there was no money when people requested them to lay roads, provide drinking water or begin employment generation works in drought-hit areas, Mr. Ramakrishnudu said.

He felt that the High Court could take cognisance of media reports and reopen the case `suo motu' pertaining to advance mobilisation funds released by the Government to private contractors.
