VIJAYAWADA: The Telugu Desam Party MLA from Nandigama, Devineni Umamaheswara Rao, on Thursday, said that the Congress Ministers and MLAs hailing from the district had "ditched the farmers" after coming to power in the recent general elections. The Congress leaders were more worried about protecting their ministerial positions and getting official favours rather than attending to farmers' woes, Mr. Rao observed.
Water diversion
Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Rao said that the Ministers and Congress MLAs were playing the role of a silent spectator, even as the Rajasekhara Reddy Government was allegedly bent upon harming the interests of Krishna district farmers by seeking to divert 40 tmc feet of water for Handri-Neeva project. Under the TDP dispensation, it was decided to permit diversion of only 5.5 tmcft for Handi-Neeva, Mr. Rao said and added that the increased diversion as decided upon by the Government would have a bad impact to the extent of denying proper supply of water to 12 lakh acres in the district.
