VIJAYAWADA: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, will deliver the convocation address at the 9th annual convocation of NTR University of Health Sciences to be held here on April 23 at 9 a.m. at Tummalapallivari Kshetrayya Kala Kshetram. For the first time, a Chief Minister will be delivering the convocation address of the university. The Chancellor of the University and Governor, Sushil Kumar Shinde, will preside over the convocation. The Chancellor will approve award of degrees to a total of 2,781 students on the occasion. Of these, 88 students will receive degrees in person. Meanwhile, the University's Executive Council had discussed and accepted the decision of the Chief Minister who declined the offer of an honorary doctorate. At the same time, the EC had decided to go without conferring the honorary doctorate on anyone for this convocation.
`No honorary doctorates'
The Vice-Chancellor of the Health University, R. Sambasiva Rao, told presspersons here on Thursday that the honorary doctorate would not be conferred this time. Dr. Rao observed that one of the reasons for making the offer of honorary doctorate to Dr. Reddy was that he hailed from the medical fraternity. "It is indeed a great achievement for a doctor to become the Chief Minister. The EC recommended his name. He showed his wisdom in declining it and we accepted his decision gracefully," Dr. Rao added. Dr. Rao said that the offer of honorary doctorate was even approved by the Chancellor and asserted that the declining of honorary doctorate was a purely a personal decision of the CM.
