The new-look and restored Langer Houz lake is ready for inauguration

HYDERABAD: The metamorphosis of yet another highly polluted lake into a clean water lake and recreational zone is quite amazing. The Langer Houz lake is the third among the highly polluted 18 lakes to have been restored by the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA) under the Netherlands-funded Green Hyderabad Environment Programme (GHEP).

The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, would dedicate to the public the restored lake on Friday. The restoration programme was taken up under the Integrated Lake Treatment and Conservation programme.

`Problematic' lakes

Of the 87 lakes identified for restoration, 18 were termed `problematic' (category-I) based on the level of pollution assessed by analysing the water and lake sediments.

The restoration of the Langer Houz lake was taken up at a cost of Rs.5.2 crores and the work was completed in one-and-a-half years. The work included strengthening of the bund, de-silting by dredging, formation of ring bund to prevent encroachment, creation of inflow and outflow channels, sluice repair, etc. A sewer network was developed in the neighbourhood and a 1.2 mld sewage treatment plant (STP) and wetland were constructed, which had become operational a few months ago.

The treated sewage and water alone is being let into the lake.

There has already been remarkable improvement in the quality of lake water, with the percentage of pollutants and toxic sediments coming down significantly, according to the HUDA Vice-Chairman, G. Ashok Kumar.

As a bonus, old city residents have got a landscape garden developed in an area of 2.5 acres laid out between the historic fort wall and the lake. Amenities like restaurant, parking lot, children play area with play equipment, boating facility and pathways have been provided.
