Moves to strengthen Krishna water network

K.V.S. Madhav

Tata Consultancy Services to suggest improvements

HYDERABAD: With the Krishna water pipeline yet to settle down to lug the full capacity of 90 Millions Gallons per Day and breaking down twice in the last 10 days, the Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has sought a review of the project components to put in place a much more stronger system for the project's second phase.

It has commissioned the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to suggest improvements to be made to the pipeline network that envisages bringing another 90 MGD of the Krishna waters by the next summer.

"There is nothing wrong with the present pipeline system. It is economically a good design. Such breakdowns are normal when a pipeline system is put to full capacity use. It takes a month for the system to settle down to the full load," the Director, Projects, HMWSSB, D. Ramakrishna, said here on Thursday.

Precautionary steps

The review by an external agency in the wake of the breakdowns was not only meant to improve the existing pipelines but also validate the improvement plans already incorporated by the board's technical and project personnel.

The board already issued tender notices for the second phase of the project and plans to ground works by mid-May.

To make the pipeline network foolproof, the board authorities plan to take precautionary measures, including intensified radiographic tests on welding joints that tend to give away owing to water pressure, besides putting them up for cent per cent ultrasonic testing.

"We also plan to increase the diameter of the pipe from 2200 mm to 2500 mm, provided the Steel Authority of India assures us of supplies," he said.

The move would reduce velocity of water, thus increasing the pumping efficiency besides reducing power consumption.
