Open drain a bother for patients

HYDERABAD: Patients at the Fever Hospital at Nallakunta are grappling with a peculiar health problem. One that is not connected in any way to the diseases they are diagnosed with.

Stench, litter and mosquitoes from the Hussainsagar nala that flows alongside the hospital add to the tribulations of patients here. Aggravating their misery is the absence of a proper compound wall for the nala.

The existing compound wall, hospital sources say, started collapsing gradually a couple of years ago.

Though the hospital authorities represented the issue to the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad a year-and-a-half ago, there has been no concrete action so far.

The Hospital Superintendent, K.N. Sudha Ramana, believes MCH "is on the job, maybe preparing estimates". She admits the nala is a problem for patients and adds that the hospital's budget does not offer the luxury of a compound wall.

She also has no idea of what happened to the promise of a Telugu Desam team, which visited the hospital during the recent jaundice outbreak, that the party would donate Rs. 3 lakhs for a compound wall.

The lanes beside the hospital are replete with heaps of garbage, roads dotted with potholes full with stagnant water and even stray dogs.

Bins of no use

Mohd. Shabeer, a telephone booth operator here, says though the MCH has placed a few bins, most of the garbage is dumped outside them.

"The lack of civic sense, coupled with irregular cleaning by the MCH only adds to the problem," he says.
