Demolition drive

NEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHI NEW DELHINEW: Resuming its anti-encroachment drive, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's demolition squad on Thursday razed illegal constructions on the second and third floors of at least three buildings in the busy Chandni Chowk area of Old Delhi.

The demolition squad accompanied by Delhi police personnel reached the area in the morning, and by evening demolitions in the three buildings were carried out without any protest from the public. However, the MCD squad did not touch the building housing the famous Haldiram's restaurant as its owners had obtained a stay order from the court against the demolition notice.

During the past two days, the MCD squad had demolished illegal constructions in seven buildings of the area falling in the City Zone. On the directions from the High Court, the civic body has identified 843 properties for demolition in the Chandni Chowk area that have come up by encroaching on area in front of footpath in the market. So far over 100 such constructions have been removed. The civic body has to appear before the court on April 27 to tell the progress about the demolition drive.
